Opinions on The Scarlett Letter?? No answers, just opinion. Please?

I've always had mixed feelings about this novel. I think it showed great strength of character for her not to tell who fathered her child. I also think that it was wrong for society to punish her with the scarlet letter and not the father. (I wonder if she had told would he have had to wear one as well?)
